The National Math Olympiad for Students is an annual event aimed at enhancing the quality of math teaching and learning, fostering a love for math among students, and identifying and nurturing talented math students from universities, academies, colleges, and specialized high schools across the country. Each year, the Vietnam Mathematical Society, the Ministry of Education and Training, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Association collaborate with a local university, academy, or college to host this event. In recent years, the competition has attracted many participants and has become a widely anticipated activity among universities, academies, colleges, and specialized high schools nationwide.
In 2024, the 30th National Math Olympiad for Students and Pupils took place from April 8th to April 13th at Duy Tan University in Da Nang. The competition saw the participation of 699 contestants with 807 entries from 95 universities and academies across the country. Each institution was allowed to send up to 10 students to compete in one or both of the Algebra and Calculus categories. This year, the Math Olympiad team from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Dong Thap University participated with eight students competing in both Algebra and Calculus.
According to the competition regulations, up to 45% of participants can win official prizes, distributed in a 1:2:3 ratio for First, Second, and Third Prizes, and up to 10% of participants can receive Consolation Prizes. With rigorous preparation and high determination from both teachers and students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, supported by the leadership of Dong Thap University, the university's Math Olympiad team achieved high results, with 80% of the team members winning official prizes, including 2 First Prizes, 2 Second Prizes, 3 Third Prizes, and 1 Consolation Prize. The specific results are as follows:
1. Tran Quoc Huy - Class of DHSTOAN22B - First Prize in Algebra;
2. Pham Quoc Thai - Class of DHSTOAN21B - First Prize in Algebra;
3. Bui Phuong Nam - Class of DHSTOAN22B - Second Prize in Algebra and Third Prize in Calculus;
4. Tran Phan Nhat Thien - Class of DHSTOAN22B - Second Prize in Calculus;
5. Pham Chi Hieu - Class of DHSTOAN21B - Third Prize in Algebra;
6. Nguyen Top Ti - Class of DHSTOAN20A - Third Prize in Calculus;
7. Nguyen Minh Tien - Class of DHSTOAN23C - Consolation Prize in Calculus.
In addition to competing and participating in the opening and closing ceremonies of the event, the team members took the opportunity to promote Dong Thap University by interacting with other teams. They also explored some of Da Nang's notable landmarks.
The achievements of this year's student Math Olympiad team serve as a motivational boost for both the teachers and students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Dong Thap University. They will continue to uphold the spirit of diligence, enhance integration, and improve their expertise in teaching and learning mathematics. It is believed that the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science will continue to maintain and elevate their academic accomplishments in future competitions.
