For many years now, each rainy season has brought about the complication of mosquito-borne diseases in some areas. Faced with the complex situation of dengue fever outbreaks, many localities have actively launched campaigns to combat mosquito larvae. Releasing guppies is an effective method to control mosquito larvae, preventing them from developing into disease-transmitting mosquitoes, including those carrying dengue fever.

The Youth Union of the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Resources

Realizing the importance of this initiative, the Youth Union of the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Resources collaborated with the Aquaculture Department, utilizing available resources at Mr. Nguyen Huu Tan's aquaculture farm to breed and supply guppies to residents for combating mosquito larvae. They also provided guidance to some households on breeding fish in small ponds and rock gardens, which serve as both decoration and a means of controlling mosquito larvae. Notably, the practice of sharing fish among the community has become common, as people understand that breeding fish helps prevent diseases.

Guppies Breeding Campaign

As part of the 2023 Green Summer Campaign, 400 guppies were distributed to My Xuong commune on May 28, and 600 guppies were given to Phuong Thinh commune, Cao Lanh district, on June 9, 2023.

Youth Union Members' Activities

This initiative has been ongoing since 2015, with the Youth Union of the Faculty annually providing at least 2,000 guppies to local communities. The effectiveness of fish breeding and distributing guppies to control mosquito larvae and prevent dengue fever outbreaks has been confirmed. Eliminating mosquito larvae means reducing mosquito populations, which serve as disease vectors. Therefore, besides breeding guppies, the Youth Union actively promotes and advises residents to actively engage in breeding guppies, combined with traditional mosquito control methods, to enhance community safety.
