Webometrics is a global university ranking updated twice a year, in January and July. According to its published methodology, the ranking is determined based on three groups of indicators: Impact, accounting for 50%; Openness, 10%; and Research Excellence, 40%.
The Impact indicator is determined by the number of external domains linking to the higher education institution’s web presence; the Openness indicator reflects citations from the Google Scholar profiles of highly cited researchers; and the Research Excellence indicator is based on the number of scientific publications among the top 10% most cited papers across research fields during the 2019–2023 period, using data from Scopus/Scimago.
Webometrics does not assess website design or web traffic alone. Instead, it uses digital and academic indicators to reflect a higher education institution’s web presence, impact, openness, and research performance.
